it's been a long time, baby...

so, i'm trying to figure out what to do for the boss blog.

but i'm just going to let ideas run to see where they can go. march 2009 was quite some time ago and so have my tastes. although some of my cravings in the spring are now too trendy and i've dropped interest in some of those.

what to be particular about:
-the curvature of zippers. on skirts especially-- it can get awkward. it might pooch out and ruin the fit. and they are also painful in sunny places if they are metal. watch OUT.

-stitching. be a little more careful and try the item on a little longer than you need to figure out if there are any itchy stitches that can't be trimmed.

-color matching. consider, what can you wear it with? how will you wear it? how often? seems common sense but i waste sooo much money on things i don't wear enough because i don't consider these things.

-bottoms: how do they fit around the thigh (especially for shorts)? double check your booty b/c those loose shorts that everyone is digging makes everyone look like they have WEDGIES. and how about the ankles? how will you fit the ankle fit with different types of shoes (sneakers, sandals, flip flops, flats, boots)

-what moods are you going to wear this for? do you have to be a specific mood to enjoy what you're wearing? if you can't feel two of the three things about it at once, perhaps you should reconsider the purchase: sexy, effortless, casual/playful.

EXAMPLES:
-i love boatneck loose shirts b/c i can feel sexy in it with shorts or a pencil skirt...
-i can feel casual when i pair it with rolled up straight legs and rainbows.
-i can feel effortless and sexy in a pair of loose sweats.
-a glittery halter top could only make me feel sexy. and only some of the time.
-a pair of Uggs make me feel none of the above.
-baby tees with sayings on them make me feel effortless (in this case, lazy)
-a cupcake skirt would only make me feel playful.
-plaid shirts make me feel only playful, because i personally try too hard to style the plaid.

cravings right now

FIRST,

recommendations for other people besides my cravings to follow---

1. low wedge, greek-inspired flats. so almost flat but with a little height. makes your ankles look all pretty. and get a pedi to go with it! give it some detail but beware these things:

the metal: (it will burn your foot if you're in the sun too long this summer
the material: patent leather can rub/cut big time. ouchy.
the colors: consider the colors in your wardrobe. black may seem like a general versatile color, and so might silver, but golds and browns may go better with your summer colors and patterns.

2. a go-to piece that doesn't make you try hard to feel good. by this, i mean the floral pretty girl top (with sleeves) or a slightly form-fitting dress. although i still don't get why kate moss is versatile as a model, i know why she's admired personally. she wears her clothes and constructs her ensembles effortlessly.

3. a pair of loose long shorts, not bermuda style but a good deal below Daisy Duke level. makes the upper thigh a little bit more of a mystery. in the way that a tailored suit on a woman makes her sexy, that's what long loose shorts do for a woman's leg. bubble shorts with pleats are my favorite.

4. if you haven't already, get the slouchy, soft, light-materialed cotton shirt. for the days you really don't care and don't want to do the go-to piece. paired with torn jeans or near-daisy dukes. that image, i match with being one of the boys on a sunny afternoon playing football at the playground.

5. a look at alexander mcqueen's latest couture show. it's so dark and bold. not sure if that was trying to draw attention to the ugly scariness of the economy... mind the pile of black junk in the stage background.

6. then take a look at the following season's projections. nothing new. also an interpretation of where our country is going to sit for a little while. i think.

NOW,
for myself, I have been fancying the idea of...

1. giant, cross torso messenger bag, preferably a caramel leather. makes me feel like a college kid with business to take care, on her way to find herself... cheesy but that's me.

2. lots and lots of studs. leather double wrap around belt with studs or similar detail. that part of my heart is the tomboy personality.

3. cute girly tops that can be thrown on with anything--- jeans, shorts, bermudas, heels, ballet flats... everything. that is supposed to counter the tomboyishness.

4. a comfy but chic pair of street athletic shoes. my feet are dying from the flip-flops and the flats craze of the past 3-5 years. though i did buy a great pair of michael kors peep toes. they look mad high, but they've got a simple trick. makes my legs look killer strong, and every girl should learn to walk in a pair. haha, totally goes against the comfy street shoes... but i really wanted these low-somethings by nike that were black and gold. i thought my legs would look powerful.

5. i want my 40 cm. birkin nowwwwwy. my backpack just can't handle it anymore. although my back would much prefer it. but... my wallet would much prefer a long term investment, something that's timeless, but doesn't burn a hole in the piggy bank. i gotta find the forever pieces to pass down to my future daughters/nieces/grandkids. maybe not the clothes... but the accessories. which do i pick? this sounds so terrible and vain, ha ha...

6. studs. for some reason dangly earrings seem to make me look like i'm trying too hard. but i need something to emphasize my neck, so...

7. emphasis on the cute girly top, but with a deep neck line that points, or curves but comes to a tip. and covers my biceps. those still need some work. i want a blend of hard and soft. but that is also me.

8. a pedicure. that's just b/c the feet are disgusting...

9. motivation to get my work done. that's a gimme.

10. mixed greens with some cranberries, pecans and water chestnuts. mm.

rules II

some more general rules to follow, aesthetic & ... can't find the word... sentimental for now.

- wear it because you LOVE it. not because it's what's popular, not because it's expensive, not because it's cheap, not because it's brand name, not because it looks ok, not because it only shows a little bit of your butt crack--- enough said.

- for us normal people:
  • wear skirts above the knee, or shoot for the peak of the articulation between the thigh and the calf (at the knee). if you don't get it at that peak, your thigh will appear thicker than it is. angles angles angles!
  • perk up your posture. pushing your shoulders back makes a night & day difference between your perceived confidence level.
  • learn to wear heels. even a slight platform is good. creating an angle in your ankles is more appealing to the eye. making the 90-degree ankle can either create boyish-ness or "cankles."
  • invest in an expensive pair of jeans, because they are definitely worth it. also stick with dark wash nice jeans-- dark colors create a pretty silhouette on all shapes and sizes.
  • also invest in these classics: a tailored white button up, a favorite sweater, the perfect coat, a dark leather pump, a set of pearls, a power watch, a crisp leather carry all bag, and unique, personal set of earrings and necklace. those last two are your go to, default items for all degrees of formality.
-for dressing
  • i like to contrast. if you put a lot of volume on top, take in everything and minimize on the bottom. make sure to capitalize on your assets appropriately; so, if you would like to show off your tush, find something form fitting of your bottom. if you think you have a great collar bone, show it. Conversely, if you hate your thighs, wear a nice pencil skirt to show off you waist or calves instead. If you've got a lot of flab on the triceps, wear sleeves or a shawl/cape thing that emphasizes your forearm.
  • no midriff, period.
  • there's nothing wrong with confidence, but use your common sense. do you reeeeeeally like your boobs, or do you think that they should get attention because they are larger than life? flaunting and being flamboyant are a bit different from one another.
  • if you're on the pale side, avoid dark colors. try lighter colors, even some white, to make your skin look tanner in comparison. for all skin tones, it's generally better to avoid wearing shoe colors that are similar to your skin. it just looks funny.
  • match your metals. silver detail, silver jewelry/preferably white diamonds. gold jewelry, gold detail/rusty warm fall colors. unless you are wearing something that has a gold silver mix, stick with this. :)
  • match your leather as best as possible, otherwise VASTLY contrast it. i can't tell you how foolish i felt wearing black patent leather heels with a dark chocolate bag. that's about as weird as wearing navy blue with black.
  • have a little texture and pattern in your wardrobe. the most versatile thing you can use is a basic floral pretty girl top. you can wear it with high waisted pants, a pencil skirt, pale or dark jeans, leggings, khakis, cargo pants, capris, ... everything. it goes great under a cardigan, vneck sweater, a vest..

for shopping
-try on that oh-so hideous thing with the ruffles and the colors... you might have found a treasure. don't be afraid to try something different!
-don't be afraid to negotiate that stain or tear. usually you can get 10-15% off. it might be pennies but hey, that adds up quick.
-nothing wrong with buying lots of cheap accessories/costume jewelry so long as you're not allergic to metals/fake gold.
-i don't care what men make fun of me for-- different bags are for different occasions. BUT do invest in a bag for weekend day outings, another for daily activities (the office/school/whatever), and a wristlet for going out (club, bar, etc).

designer handbags

Guidelines for carrying a handbag without feeling like a fool:

1. Immediately cross Coach and Dooney & Bourke off your list of choices from thought. Being a label whore is foolish; buying an overpriced handbag from China is even more so.

2. Think of all the things you: carry all the time, have forgotten to take/bring, have ever needed, and visualize it all in the bag and taking it out. That way you can determine the depth of the bag, number of pockets, etc. Also consider how you prefer to hold it-- shoulders straps, hooked on the elbow, etc.

3. Spend a good time or two carrying the purse around the store to see if you like the way it feels.

4. Consider the types of shoes you have and if they are, for the most part, compatible with the color/type of material of the bag.

5. Don't look at the price tag. Price doesn't determine quality all the time, nor style, nor your social status.

6. As with all clothes you buy, make sure you love your bag and are crazy about it. Nothing is more wasteful than buying clothes just for the sake of buying it.

And that is all for now.
